A Manchester-based Latin jazz orchestra, playing original arrangements of Afro-Cuban jazz standards, salsa classics and Brazilian favourites, combining sensuous vocals, sophisticated horn lines and explosive percussion solos. With their vision to unite the rhythms of the Americas, their music is uplifting, inspiring and unifying, and celebrates the melting pot of cultures that arose out of the African Slave Trade,  whilst focusing on the Afro-Cuban and globalised ‘salsa’ idioms that have become  important musical languages and forms of solidarity and cultural exchange between communities throughout the world.

During the interval there will be a short performance by participants from the workshop earlier in the day.

Mojito

Richard Sliwa – drums, timbales
Damian Castillo Diaz -- vocals
Howard Jacobs – tenor saxophone, bongos, bell
Jonny Enright – trombone
Andrzej Baranek – piano
Dave Tompkins – double bass
Christian Weaver – congas

A hard-driving salsa sound influenced by the modern syncopated and dynamic ‘timba’ style of playing: leaving room for improvisation and exploration of a tune as well as keeping the audience dancing. Influences range from classic Fania tunes, traditional rumba and conga habanera (carnival-style brass, percussion and vocals played in the audience), reggae and hip-hop. Mojito also feature compositions by band-members and new original songs from Chaguito Garzon Rill (percussionist and composer for leading Cuban rumba group Clave y Guaguanco). You’ll feel like you’re in downtown Havana with a good rum in your hand – a true party experience.
