Hands-on family fun events at this year’s mjf
This year we’ve been busy creating some fantastic, interactive, family-friendly events!
In fact, our very first mjf 2017 event is a hands-on musical journey for under 12s on Friday 28 July: 12.30 – 13.30. HSQ – How Monkey Found His Swing at The Bridgewater Hall’s Barbirolli Room is led by acclaimed storyteller Ursula Holden Gill who weaves a tale around saxophones and percussion for under 12s to discover rhythms. The event is part of The Bridgewater Hall’s Little Bite Music series. Update: all tickets for this event have now been taken – sorry folks. Read on, there’s still plenty for families to enjoy!
Next up on Saturday 29 July is HSQ – HMS Syncopation in our special, 1920s Salon Perdu Spiegeltent in Albert Square (the festival hub) from 9.45 – 10.30am. HSQ and a storyteller premiere this interactive concert for 5 – 11 year olds. All aboard for a musical journey around the world to create a vibrant, fruit-salad-samba of world rhythms. Tickets: £8.50 (inc 50p bkg fee) / 4-tkt offer £30.80 (inc £2.80 bkg fee). More details and how to book here.
We start Sunday 30 July with The Improvisation Salon – again in the Salon Perdu (9.45 – 10.30am). If you’ve never tried improvising and if you’ve never played an instrument before, this is your chance to have a go guided by specialist tutor Dave Evans. No skills or experience necessary and we provide a colourful array of tuned percussion instruments. Have a go fun for ages 12+. Tickets: £11 (inc £1 bkg fee) / 2-tkt offer £19.80 (inc £1.80 bkg fee). Find out more and book here.
Meanwhile, in the spectacular surrounds of the Great Hall in the Manchester Town Hall little ones aged 1 – 8 can take part in Our Kids Jazzy Jungle Social, featuring HSQ (from 10 – 11.45am). Bopping babies, grooving toddlers and jazzy youngsters get to try out arts and crafts, silent disco, groovy baby, story-telling and live music from HSQ’s impish quartet of saxophonists. Tickets: £8.50 (inc 50p bkg fee) / 4-tkt offer £30.80 (inc £2.80 bkg fee). Pre-walkers go FREE. More details and how to book here.
