Collective X brings formidable feminine power to Manchester in the form of vocalist Alya Al-Sultani (“formidable” – The Times), Heidi Vogel (“an extraordinary voice” – Jamie Cullum) and Shirley Smart (“one of the best improvising cellists in the UK” – Jazz Mann) along with four guests in the form of extraordinary young jazz musicians including David Mrakpor of Blue Lab Beats, Dominic Canning and Benjamin Appiah of Triforce and the brilliant guitarist Shirley Tetteh.

Al-Sultani describes Collective X’s music as “chaos you can sing along to” and their recent album “Love & Protest” marries a command of heavy grooves with free jazz and wild collective improvisation. Bringing together an experimental line-up for Manchester Jazz Festival, the aim is to bring several musical worlds together – all jazz, all different and unique in their own right – to create a whole new sound, spontaneous in the moment, and a one-time only experience at mjf.
